As the world’s largest retailer, Walmart has made an enterprise-scale commitment to the greening of their supply chain. Walmart's goal is to be powered by 100% renewable energy, to create zero waste and to sell sustainable products.

Walmart was recognized as the largest on-site green power generator in the U.S. with more than 323 renewable energy projects globally at the end of 2013. These projects provide its own facilities with more than 2.2 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable electricity annually. Together with renewable electricity from the grid, 24.2% of its electricity needs globally are supplied by renewable sources.

Walmart’s first 1 MW wind turbine completed its first year of operation. This utility-scale turbine provides approximately 15% to 20% of the total electricity required by its Red Bluff Distribution Center in California.

Walmart U.S. opened its first 100% LED supercenter in South Euclid, Ohio, which annually consumes 34% less energy than a conventional store. It fulfilled a pledge made in 2009 to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20 percent by 2012 and today Walmart is on track to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from its global supply chain by the end of 2015.

By improving the fleet efficiency, it saved almost $130 million and avoided emitting almost 103,000 metric tons of CO2, about the equivalent of taking 20,000 cars off the road.

In terms of zero waste, Walmart’s achievements are: In 2012, it exceeded the target to reduce global plastic shopping bag waste by reducing bag waste globally by 38.1 percent. And packaging was reduced by 5 percent by 2013.

To meet the customers’ expectations, Walmart works aggressively to provide sustainable products and the achievements are Expanding Sustainability Index scorecard rollout to more than 700 categories, Piloting the Sustainability Index in six markets, The Walmart Foundation also provided a $2 million grant to help support the launch of The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) in China.
