BROAD Invented “Stainless Steel Honeycomb Structure"

HOME/Best Practice

In 2015, BROAD disrupted itself, rewrote history once more, and invented “Stainless Steel Honeycomb Structure".
With reference to the technology of space capsule, BROAD adopts stainless steel panels, honeycomb cores and copper brazing at 1083℃ to produce columns, cross beams, floor slabs, walls and roofs so that the earthquake resistance, fire protection, sound isolation, heat isolation and life design of buildings can meet the maximum of human technologies.

Ever since the completion of the Empire State Building in 1931, the global construction industry has almost stopped making any technological progress.

In 2009, BROAD developed the steel - structure sustainable building which was 90% factory-made, and actualized completing a 6In 2015, BROAD disrupted itself, rewrote history once more, and invented “Stainless Steel Honeycomb Structure".

What's more, thanks to the invention of "sandwich copper brazing streamline production", space technology is no more a synonym of "costliness".

Honeycomb Buildings are more cost-effective than conventional buildings — Great technologies are always incredible! After humans have experienced bricks and tiles, reinforced concrete and steel structures, the 4th revolution of building materials is coming. If it did come, it would definitely be the last revolution.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE AND STEEL STRUCTURE

The Honeycomb Building and conventional steel building structure the same technically. The differences lie in details.  Honeycomb structure relies on honeycomb cores to control unstability, while steel structure depends on increased steel thickness to control that.

Honeycomb structure does not get corroded for thousands of years, while steel structure keeps room for corrosion by increased thickness and anti-rust treatment.

Sound isolation of honeycomb floor slabs is twice as good as that of concrete ones.

Honeycomb structure stands 300℃ temperature higher than steel structure.

Honeycomb parts are as smooth as a mirror, while steel structure needs decoration outwardly.

HONEYCOMB PART PARAMETERS

Main part dimension: 12×2×0.15 m

Dimension tolerance: L×W±1 mm, Thickness±0.2 mm

Material: stainless steel SUS201

Tensile strength: 520 MPa

Welding material: pure copper

Welding process: oxygen-isolated brazing at 1083℃

Floor sound isolation: 63 dB (A) (equal to concrete with the thickness of 300mm)

Anti-corrosion: 0.1mm corrosion per 2000 years under normal atmosphere (5000 times better than that of steel)

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Architects can consider the honeycomb parts as plate materials for plate furniture, and design a building as they like. ?

However, to control the cost, architects should study dimensions of standard honeycomb parts repeatedly and try their best to adopt standard parts. Non-standard ones will bring about additional cost and extend construction time.

Attention should be paid to the restriction of container mode transportation if any change occurs in part dimensions per architectural design drawings inside the factory: the length of floor slabs and columns should be restricted to 3 types: 12m, 9m and 6m, for they are carriers for transportation set. It is acceptable to put a small quantity of non-standard parts into transportation set. ?The exterior and interior walls are 20mm-honeycomb plates sandwiched with rock wool, which can be in any shape, and even curved shapes.

Though honeycomb parts are new materials, their strength calculation and the structural system design calculation follow the conventional building standards, including Chinese, European and American standards.

STRUCTURE DESIGN

Local standards are applied for project schemes, preliminary designs, workshop drawings review, the review of super high rises beyond the local codes and standards and procedure for fire safety review.

Structural system: shear wall structure, bundled tube structure (or a structure with the two combined) ?

Design reference: local standard — "Code for Design of Steel Structure" ?Strength calculation: finite element numerical analysis ?

Strength calculation softwares recommended: SAP2000, Midas, YJK

MODE OF TRANSPORTATION

International standard container modes are used in the sizes of 40ft, 30ft and 20ft, which are completely consistent with the dimension, weight & bayonet coupling of trucks, trains, vessels and hoisting tongs in docks, therefore, freight can be charged per container transportation pricing. On average, every 40ft container (12190×2437×3030) can contain about 200m2 building parts. Max weight does not surpass container requirements.

INSTALLATION AND CONSTRUCTION

Installation can be done by BROAD or a professional company designated by BROAD, or clients can install by themselves under the supervision of BROAD. BROAD can provide the hoisting devices for super high-rise buildings.

Construction of foundation and basement are not in BROAD scope. While, basement for a Honeycomb Building is the same with a conventional one but load for the former is 3-5 times lighter.

Construction time: 3~6 storeys/day for standard buildings while 1 storey/day for non-standard ones.
